Week 5: Stars, Galaxies, and Origin of our Solar System

Image
 1. What did you do in lab today? My group galaxy presentation 2. big questions -  The sun is directly over what line because today is the first day of fall? It is over the equator . If I was on the equator at noon, today, no clouds in the sky, what direction would my shadow point? No shadow the sun is directly above you if standing on the equator. How about shadow today in Iowa at noon? The direct sunlight would be going to the north and since the sun is in the south. 3. What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? Below are my notes from discussion. 4. Read the textbook: Done! 1. What did I learn from the textbook? Notes that I took from the chapter! 2. What was most helpful? The most helpful was listening and creating the presentations and then going over all the information in discussion today and the chapter. It was good to reinforce all those ideas multiple times and to see it a few times in a span of a few days. 3. What do you need more information on? Nothing at the m...

Week 4: Our Solar System

Image
 1. What did you do in lab today? 2. big questions -  WHAT DOES A SCALE MODEL OF A SOLAR SYSTEM LOOK LIKE? A scale model of a solar system was actually way bigger than I thought. It was many meters, using play dough the planets are very small to scale. It is very small balls many meters apart from one another! 3. What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? Below are my notes from discussion. 4. Read the textbook: Done! 1. What did I learn from the textbook? Notes that I took from the chapter! 2. What was most helpful? The most helpful activity this week had to be the lab that we did in class. I learned so much by creating the model scale of the inner 4 planets in our solar system. It put the size into perspective of just how big it is and the size of the planets compared to one another. 3. What do you need more information on? Nothing at the moment. 4. Questions, comments or concerns? A comment that I have is I still get confused on the direction of the sun and how it create...

Week 3: Space: The Moon

Image
 1. What did you do in lab today? What was the big question in lab today?   What are the phases of the Moon and why do they occur? The phases of the moon are new moon, young moon, waxing crescent, waxing quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, waning quarter, waning crescent, old moon. We see different phases of the moon because the orbit of the moon and the Earth change daily so the sunlight hits different portions of the moon causing different phases. How does the Moon affect life on Earth? The moon affects life on Earth because the Moon has a gravitational pull on the Earth which causes big tidal waves on the opposite side of the earth than the moon is on. Additionally, it regulates climate and seasons on Earth. Why does the moon have two very different looking sides? The moon has different looking side because the side of the moon closest to Earth is less deep, and as it faces the Earth more it has more plasticity causing craters. The other side of the moon is ...

Week 2: Space: The Final Frontier

 1. What did you do in lab today?     We did not have lab this week - it was Labor day. 2. big questions -  How did the Space Race shape our understanding of space and technology? Space Race and space exploration allows us to know so much more about our solar system.  The Space Race created competition that led to so many advancements and discoveries like more information on the moon as well. Additionally, it gives us a better look into what life could look like on Mars.  What are the major milestones in human space exploration? Sputnik, first man on the moon, rovers/satellites onto mars, closer look at our solar system. How have different people contributed to space science? There are so many different key parts, but the amount of mathamaticians, astronauts, crews, technicians. However, it is incredibly important to acknowledge diversity of the women and men that contributed so greatly. 3. What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? Below are my notes fro...
