Week 4: Our Solar System

WHAT DOES A SCALE MODEL OF A SOLAR SYSTEM LOOK LIKE?

A scale model of a solar system was actually way bigger than I thought. It was many meters, using play dough the planets are very small to scale. It is very small balls many meters apart from one another!

1. What did I learn from the textbook? Notes that I took from the chapter!





2. What was most helpful?

The most helpful activity this week had to be the lab that we did in class. I learned so much by creating the model scale of the inner 4 planets in our solar system. It put the size into perspective of just how big it is and the size of the planets compared to one another.

3. What do you need more information on?

Nothing at the moment.

4. Questions, comments or concerns?

A comment that I have is I still get confused on the direction of the sun and how it creates waning vs waxing crescent and quarter moons. I need to work on my directional understandings of the sun.

What did you do in lab today? We discussed questions which led to my answers: My best understanding of phases of the moon is that as the moon orbits we see the moon from different angles at our location and we see it from a different phase. I am forgetting how long it takes to orbit, but that causes the phases. My best understanding of the seasons is when we get further from the sun, that causes our seasons to change. The further from the sun we are that is when it is fall and winter, and then closer is spring, closest is summer.   A lunar eclipse is when the moon aligns with the sun in front of it, I believe that is why it turns orange.  1. What did you do in lab today? My group galaxy presentation 2. big questions -  The sun is directly over what line because today is the first day of fall? It is over the equator . If I was on the equator at noon, today, no clouds in the sky, what direction would my shadow point? No shadow the sun is directly above you if standing on the equator. How about shadow today in Iowa at noon? The direct sunlight would be going to the north and since the sun is in the south. 3. What did you learn in Thursday's discussion? Notes that I took from the chapter! 2. What was most helpful? Ted's lecture portion and the textbook really solidified how much learning and teaching I will have to do about climate change. Kids can handle real information and there are wealths of ways to bring hope and learn how to try to save our world. 3. What do you need more information on? Nothing at the moment. 4.
