Week 12: Climate Change / Albedo and Greenhouse Gases

What did you do in lab?

 Lab activity:

1. What are the primary points in the video?

Polar ice caps are melting leading to rising sea level which is ruining any coastal communities. Powerful and authority figures are distorting views for money. Additionally, it is rare to use wind and solar power and other sustainable practices which makes all of it more expensive to implement and purchase.

2. Major issues?

So many people do not have power and have no access. The amount that carbon dioxide is emitted from beef and that the general public does not see this as an issue. Scientists are not able to predict the rate and it is happening faster than anyone could expect. The media does not portray true facts, it is very difficult to find real information about what the government is doing.

3. What questions do you want us to teach you?

How can we make a difference with restraints of being a college student, with limited time and money? Expenses?

Is clean energy really clean?

How many countries have truly switched over to wind and solar power run?

4. How do I prefer teaching?

I like when we begin with lab and then go into a lecture after it allows me to feel more engaged.

2. big questions

  • If you could know the truth about the threat of climate change — would you want to know?
Yes, I would want to know. Though, it did make me very sad to hear about our reality I think that hearing truly how quickly we are ruining the environment so I could also share that knowledge with others and try to start preventing little by little the damages happening to the Earth. One thing that I currently do is I do not eat beef and that was a part of the documentary which makes me think what are other small ways that I can continue to make a positive impact and reduce my carbon footprint.

3. What did you learn in Thursday's discussion?

4. Read the textbook: Done!

1. What did I learn from the textbook? Notes that I took from the chapter.

Before the flood is a part of this chapter and I have already watched the documentary and turned in my assignment. It was very impactful and it sparked a lot more questions for me.

2. What was most helpful?

This week I found that looking and listening at the actual visible shifts in discussion was very helpful. Also, the activity in lab where we looked at certain areas of Iowa and found data really showed me how much and quickly these changes are happening and how humans are speeding it up.

3. What do you need more information on?

Nothing at the moment.

4. Questions, comments or concerns?

Not today.
