Week 9: Earthquakes and Volcanoes

  • How do volcanoes and earthquakes form?
They form from my understanding by tectonic plates and there are different kinds which form different types of volcanoes and different magnitudes of earthquakes. Earthquakes more specifically form from fault lines on the tectonic plates. Volcanoes can form underwater as well. Hotspots also form volcanoes in the middle of tectonic plates.
  • What are volcanoes and earthquakes?
Volcanoes are part of the earth and can explode they are made of rock, volcanic ash, magma, and lava I believe. Earthquakes are not visible but they happen at the three different types of movements from tectonic plates. Volcanoes erupt and earthquakes cause different waves that are high frequency or low frequency.
  • What are the dangers associated with volcanoes and earthquakes?
Volcanoes if touched by people the ash and magma is hot and melts and burns many things. Also, volcanoes can be dormant or active which determines how often they erupt making them more or less dangerous. The dangers of earthquakes are destruction to land, man-made things, people and the structures of cities as well. An earthquake can also cause a tsunami.

2. What was most helpful?

I really liked going over and figuring out what I already knew about volcanoes and earthquakes. It allowed me to activate prior knowledge. It was helpful for me to connect new information to what I already know. Also, I had a lot of fun piecing together Pangea - I think that seeing how it all connects with plate tectonics helped me see WHY it all happened.
